  • Kurt Schaerer (Head of Export Finance at SECO - the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs) told Swissinfo that they are reviewing SFr300m ($215m) owed by Iraq, accrued mainly through unpaid exports of machinery and building materials. Schaerer stressed the need to a agree a common position with IMF and Paris Club. “The real discussion must take place based on concrete figures and facts, which can only be established once the situation is more stable and we [have a] perspective on Iraq." - 15th April

3. Action - Write to Finance Minister.

  • Explain that you do not believe the Iraqi people are legitimately responsible for any of Saddam's debts.
  • Ask him to write off all financial claims on the Iraqi people.
  • Ask him to negotiate within the Paris Club cartel of debtors, encouraging them to all agree on debt cancellation.

General advice on writing to politicians.
